I just read about this cheap dll that allows compressing media and files for protecting them. It is a generic dll that can be used with delphi, c++ and any dll accessing language, and packs. unpacks files on the fly so you can access them through your program. It has a "cloacked" mode to hide files from view. It says has support for your program updates and other features like online activation.

Have not tested yet but sounds good.

SmoothTeddy: Quick 3D Modeling and Painting by Takeo Igarashi

Quote
SmoothTeddy is a simple 3D sketch-based modeling and painting software. You can make rotund 3D models such as teddy bears quickly, and paint them in an integrated environment. The resulting 3D models has hierarhical joint structure, so you can use them for animation projects like Alice. You can store the model in VRML format. (SmoothTeddy is a successor to Teddy and Chameleon)

this is a very old application that i used to model for OLD 3drad but totally forgot about it . I love it :)
excellent for Mario kinda of games :P
Look into my eyes , Tell me what you see
You don't see a damn thing , 'cause you can't relate to me
You're blinded by our differences , My life makes no sense to you
I'm the persecuted one , You're the red, white and blue

i don't have the time to check if this would be useful for game dev, but sounds cool anyway and its FREE.

Ptex is a texture mapping system developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios for production-quality rendering:
No UV assignment is required! Ptex applies a separate texture to each face of a subdivision or polygon mesh.
The Ptex file format can efficiently store hundreds of thousands of texture images in a single file.
The Ptex API provides cached file I/O and high-quality filtering - everything that is needed to easily add Ptex support to a production-quality renderer or texture authoring application.

Quote
Model with 2694 faces rendered with Ptex. No explicit UV assignment was used. The largest texture layer, the fine-scale displacements, has 836 million texels stored in a single Ptex file with individual face resolutions ranging from 64 x 64 to 2048 x 2048 texels. No seams are visible across faces, even under close magnification.
( Walt Disney Animation Studios)
Motivation
There were many drawbacks to traditional texture mapping methods that led to the development of Ptex:
UV assignment was a tedious task, and making good UVs on complex models was difficult.
Texture seams could produce visible artifacts especially with displacement maps.
Large numbers of texture files were required creating a significant I/O bottleneck.
Ptex addresses all these issues by eliminating UV assignment, providing seamless filtering, and allowing any number of textures to be stored in a single file.

Ptex was used on virtually every surface in the feature film Bolt, and is now the primary texture mapping method for all productions at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Major Features
Supports Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces (including quad and non-quad faces), Loop subdivision surfaces, and polymeshes (either all-quad or all-triangle).
Several data types are supported including 8 or 16-bit integer, float, and half-precision float.
An arbitrary number of channels can be stored in a Ptex file.
Arbitrary meta data can be stored in the Ptex file and accessed through the memory-managed cache.

looks interesting...
SMAK

Main features:
Load and preview your models in 3D and UV space.
Generate great-looking AO maps at 1024x1024 in less than a minute.
Generate "color bleed" lighting maps.
Simple and slick user interface, easy to use.
Enough awesome to kill a small animal.

Youtube vid

basically its an AO map generator for $15... pretty cool

Great free 3d modeler that can import and export in .x format. It can also import .3ds. Get RadImp made by forum member shadmar and this modeler could be your best friend. I was using google sketchup and this modeler is way better, for me anyway. This modeler uses bone animation as well and UV mapping. Everything you create with this modeler is yours and can be used license free with anything you sell. This modeler makes things to big for the 3d virtual editor in 3d rad but the .x exporter lets you set the scale when you export it and no problems. I found that setting the scale to 0.25 and using RadImp to import it into 3D RAD is good for buildings and landscapes. Yep this modeler is free. Thanks Fernando for 3D RAD.

Well... it can only be used for static models. You can do bone based animations in it but it won't export the animations.  >:( Apparently it is now freeware and the original author has abandoned it! That (beep)!!!!
Darnet! Back to hunting for a good 3d modeler that does animations.

I'm having fun playing with all these terrain and model editors but file conversion is a pain.  There's a lot of cool stand alone applications but I can't seem to get much converted to .x or .3ds.  Any really cool converter apps out there for free?
