Author Topic: Game Tools for all (links galore )  (Read 66922 times)

« on: January 29, 2008, 09:41:37 AM »
Feel free to post any links you think are useful for the game creation process.
Good gaming to all !.

PS: Try to keep the posts clean with links only.

A small description line if needed for say direct download links to different versions or just if the link it's self dosent really explain what or where, then that i would expect is OK and maybe even required !.

Post any chatter about wrong links or mistakes else where or PM ( personal Message) the author about it !.

Failure to so will bring the wrath of Fernando upon you for creating unnecessary work cleaning up your mess !! .

XARA Extreme

http://www.xara.com/products/xtreme/

If you want a cartoony look to your game I recommend XARA Extreme - Its a vector package and is quick and easy to use ( Much easier to use than ADOBE illustrator in my opinion) - only $79

All the texture maps for the model below were made in xara. For more examples see my website: http://web.mac.com/marc_buckingham/iWeb/Folio/Welcome.phpl

Pro Motion

http://www.cosmigo.com/promotion/?Home+%28Pro+Motion%29

From the site -  "pro motion is a pixel oriented drawing and animation software for Windows designed similar to the famous Amiga Deluxe Paint (DPaint)."

The lite version is $29. This is great package for those who want to make textures with the skills they learnt from using Dpaint. The UI and shortcuts is nearly an exact copy.

Wood Workshop
This has been around for while, but it's great for seamless tile textures and free!

With a little tweaking textures other than wood can be made - I've used it for wallpapers, textiles, etc.

Allegorithmic MaPZone is a little more complicated, but it will do just about anything as textures go and will also do normal maps.  Documentation could be better, but it is also free:

http://www.mapzoneeditor.com/

Has some nice features like a real-time 3D previewer.

One for the more artistically inclined is ArtRage - natural media painting program (like Painter) with tablet support.  Great for painting UV maps that don't look so "computer generated".  Supports the usual graphics file formats including .psd layers.

Scaled-down free version is available, but the full version is only $25.00 USD - quite a bargain!  I have the more expensive full version of Painter but I find I use this a lot more:

Atmosphere Deluxe is an ambient soundscape generator, great for background sounds.  It comes in three versions: Atmosphere Lite (free), Atmosphere Lite Plus (midrange) and Atmosphere Deluxe (fully featured).

To use the sounds in a game a commercial license is required, I believe the cost is around $99.00 USD - relatively inexpensive as far as licenses go!  I used this for ambient sounds in my last project with the SoundEffect object in ogg format and it works great!

I found this cool site with a bunch of all free models and textures that gave me some great ideas for my game, they are mostly in 3ds and obj formats so you might have to get a converter unless using an older version of 3drad.

Ivy Generator by Thomas Luft

Import an .obj mesh, set some parameters, and ivy will "grow" over your mesh.  The ivy object can then be exported as an .obj.

http://graphics.uni-konstanz.de/~luft/ivy_generator/

The Good News:  Free
The Bad News:  Generates extremely high polys and file sizes

Best use would be for generating ivy, rendering and then using as a texture or billboard.  However, playing around with the settings can create a lower-res ivy object that can be used in Rad as shown in the pix.
