If a good proportion of your life is spent texture mapping polygon meshes, then you should probably install Roadkill. The latest version (currently rc3) is a standalone application that can be called from Maya, 3DS Max and now Softimage XSI.

Have a look at the first Roadkill example movie to get a good idea of it's usage. If you find this software useful please tell us and provide links to example images. You could also mirror some of our example movies. Roadkill is free software released under the GNU license. Roadkill 1.1 rc3 (tested on Windows 2000 and XP only) Maya and 3DS Max integrated.

I have a couple to add to this ever growing list...

Google SketchUp - Home http://sketchup.google.com/ - A free 3D Modeller, claiming to be easier to use than other modellers (which makes it good for me, lol)

Blender - http://www.blender.org/ - Another free 3D modelling program.

3D Coat (formerly 3D Brush)
A very nice low-cost alternative to Z-Brush:

http://www.3d-coat.com/index.phpl

Can import a model, then paint textures directly on it (tablet support).  Exports UV maps, model, all layers and normal maps.  From the developer's web site:

Quote
Painting textures and sculpting. It combines painting layered textures and sculpting in one easy to use interface.
3D Layers. Every layer consists of a colour, specular, transparency and displacement channel.
Compatibility. Full compatibility with Light Wave 3D, Modo through .lwo format, with Maya, 3ds Max, Carrara through .fbx (import) and .obj format.

Developer is very responsive to requests and updates frequently.  Great for us "artist" types!

Educational Version:  $89.00
Professional Verson: $120.00

Yes, here are my free favorites:

1. For People who have never worked with a CAD software, check this: http://sketchup.google.com/product_suf.phpl in many languages.
the easyest 3D tool at this side of our galaxy...  with videotutorials  but the free version doesnt export .x files :'(  (please code a converter)

2. GameSpace from Caligari: http://www.caligari.com/gamespace/  export to .x files, triagulate objects, paint on objects, bones, maybe reducing of polygons (like in truespace?), very easy to handle, free tutorialvideos at :http://www.caligari.com/gamespace/tutorial/video_3DBuzz.asp

3. I think a good idea for getting ideas about textures and lowpolygon objects (more perfomance) is to look at older games like on Playstation one, its easier to identify the objectstructures and the selfpaintet textures with light and shadow. (what about a easy SFX option in 3DRad?)

thanks for posting you're free tools, very interesting

Just found a neat plugin for sketchup that allows you to create a sphere in 1 click, ideal for collision models.
