Author Topic: Car object for ODE: faster, smoother and NO MORE BENDING WHEELS!  (Read 12645 times)

« on: March 19, 2010, 03:12:36 AM »

*Before downloading, please read this warning label. The compiled project seems to be a bit flashy due to the car moving at high speeds.
New Car Object Features:
  • Extremely fast -up to 1600MPH with some special tweaking(see video, pause at 0:55)
  • The wheels will no longer wobble or bend.
  • The car actually drives straight at any speed.
  • No gyroscopic effects during jumps
  • Smoother ride- The camera isn't as shaky when fully locked on to the car.
  • Advanced suspension like seen on the rock crawler is still possible.
  • A properties dialog is included for easy tuning.
  • A test arena is also included in the compiled version(same download).

*note: if you are looking to improve the car object, please use the one I posted on page 2. The scripts are easier to read and understand.

Edit: Check out the latest and greatest version on page 4!

Ok, I'll let you on the secret.

The collider on the bottom has wheel friction but does not necessarily spin. It should actually be bigger so that it rides over curbs and stairs better. But besides that, it's on a slider joint and connected to a spring for suspension.

Hey, with a little work, I think we could see this in the defult car object! ;D Maybe?

If anyones willing to help develop this, I'll need help on two things:
  • A gear transmition (just something basic so we can controll the throttle better)
  • Steering(we need to set the orientation of the front colliders to achieve steering) It would also be nice to have a steering delay time we could set just like we can on the normal car object

very cool, its actually set like a real car, slider for the shock, spring for rebound, as such, very impressed so far!

My next video is uploading right now. It'll be a few minutes. But I got the steering programed and a ton of physics tweaking done. :)

Edit: Alright Here it is.

I tested it in some old levels that I scrapped durring the development of 2059 Extreme Racing.

Yes. That still needs to be scripted. But in worst case scenario, they will spin using frame by frame animation. :-\

Absolutely. But, I want this to be legit! It's gotta be perfect before I release it. ;D

And just so you guys can prepare: It's going to require 3drad version 6.43 and up.

No speed limitations (stable at any speed)
After some really hardcore speed tests, it really depends on the collision mesh you are driving on. But the car normally remains completely stable for up to 500 MPH -And steering is no problem at that speed ;D ;D ;D Any higher than 1000 MPH makes the wheels sink into the ground.
