Hope it works - good luck with it.

I just get this sinking feeling that if there is something I would like to see developed (like maybe an object) I'll probably be funding the whole thing myself.  Is there a fee schedule somewhere?  Or do we just keep tossing donations until the "magic" number is reached?

I would have to see some concrete numbers before donating any money.  At least before if you paid for a subscription or flat fee you knew what you were getting *before* you make the investment - this model could mean throwing donations indefinitely and not knowing if you'll ever see it.

What happens if one donates to something and there isn't enough funding to complete it?  If there are no refunds, who then decides where the donation is spent?  I wouldn't want my donation funding something I didn't want or need because mine when belly up because of lack of funding.

How is this going to be handled?

Valid questions IMHO, shared by many here.

Fernando has the answers...

I think that fernando said that if a feature was considered feasible,  that a budget would be set to it...

Here is the thing though... 3drad has always been community driven, now it will be even more so...If someone is bitching about shaders or I/O support or anything else, they really can only blame themselves.

As for myself... I intend to donate as my finances will allow... probably in the ballpark of 10-20 bucks a month.  Hopefully more if I happen to be actively pushing a feature.

@ Geraldine-  As someone who has played with FPS creator here and there... I find that asset libraries only go so far... A great thing about 3drad is that it allows you get a taste of all aspects of project development; modeling, skinning, animation, programming(Arg!!!!)  the freedom it provides far surpasses FPSC...

Besides if you need models fast, they can be found by someone as clever as yourself...:)

My only fear is that this may attract the warez crowd...

Simple answer- you paid and supported the developer.  Feel good you've done that.  You've helped see the program continue.  I may help by making some 3Drad content everyone can enjoy.  That'll be on my time, and time is money don't you know ;)

Nice!

How to donate?

If people want "recognition" as a donator,
you could add a "list of donators" somewhere.
(with an option to put their homepage link & name)

Just a couple of questions, Fernando:
(sorry if the answer is out there, i didn't read the entire FREEWARE discussions  :-[ )

- If the needed amount of cash is reached the new feature will be available to all users, right? (even if paid by a single person)
- i know that the price varies, but could you give us a rough range, so we can start saving money or bitching :) ?

thanks in advance

Thank you everyone for the feedback  :)

I'm working on a detailed list of proposed features right now. I shall start adding items to the new donations board very soon.

The donations board will allow you to see exactly where your donations go. Each propsed feature will have its own discussion thread, where potential donors can meet, discuss, refine the proposed feature specs and even determine if they have the funds, as agroup, before donating.

After the budget is reached, development will complete and the feature will be added to the free installation file at the first opportuninty (ideally, we'll keep having a new release every month, as usual).

Stay tuned  :P

Would you send updated at email like in the past. Cause 3drad.com could have security issue eventully. It is a concern, I prefer update by email like in the past.

Yes we shall keep sending update notification emails to subscribers (all registered users are automatically subscribed and can opt-out).

There will be no security issues with 3drad.com, don't worry  :)

Fernando...  is there a possibility of releasing the inner workings of 3DRAD... someway to interface to the code  so that we can make our own objects... a 3DRAD API Object maybe...

This would be very difficult to do technically, but it will be seriously conidered eventually. Right now the big effort will be adding entries to the donations board so that people can start seeing the new scheme in action. Not every proposal will be feasible and every single one needs to be clearly defined, refined, discussed.

Hey Fernando, I can understand the move to Freeware...Mixed feelings too..Look around you guys and gals - there haven't been all that many new members in the last couple of months at least not Commercial licence members...I'm sure funding is trickling in.

Personally, I've enjoyed a year of Free GREAT updates, but never seem to get ALL the updates that I want. As a long standing 2.5+ year member, I can firmly say RAD is on it's way up - because we'll be driving it's development.

On the hand, there'll be a lot of free loaders - and people scared their hard earned money may not get them what they want.
All I can do is show my support for an already great product...However this pans out, I wish you all the best Fernando.
