Hey guys! long time, no update...

Anyway, I'm posting a new demo of my project to try and see how things are running on other people's machines, as well as to see if people like the way things are looking.

There's been a few changes since the last demo. It would be impossible for me to list them all (not because there's so many; I just tend to forget what I've changed  :P) but the main ones are:

  • no more day/night cycles. These slowed the project down far too much and served no real purpose (other than providing a little bit of eye-candy)
  • entering and exiting the ship can only be done when nearby
  • substantially more vegetation than in previous demos- NB: for this demo, I've only placed trees on one portion of the island.
  • no more resource collection - this may be permanent

And the list goes on...

Controls:

general
M - toggle map view

Boat
W,S - raise/lower sails
A,D - steer
Q,E - fire port/starboard
1,2,3 - change views (wheel,crowsnest,third person)
F - leave ship
left click - use telescope (in crowsnest)

first person character
W,S,A,D - walk/swim
1,2,3 - enter ship (when nearby)
R - toggle run/walk

It looks very nice Georgio. Excellent graphics! The trees, the islands and the ocean look outstanding.  ;)

However, the physics seem a bit buggy. At one point I jumped into the water and ended up bouncing ten meters high. And I managed to sail on the land for a couple of meters.

But you're really getting somewhere here!

Hi georgio123, this is coming on very well. You have put a lot of thought into the look of the island and the vegetation looks fantastic. The boat sails well and seem realistic with its handling.

I agree with Roberto... with the issues he raised the only one I had trouble with was get in and out of the boat. May be when you press 'F' key you should switch cameras for better result.

That was a fantastic Demo! The ship was great fun to sail! I found the waterfall, how did you make that?? Cannon was fun to fire, I found the broken trail on the one side of the island. I really liked it!

Keep up the amazing work!!!!! ;D

Thanks guys for the feedback. It's good to know people are interested in this. Also, thanks for pointing out the glitches; it's far easier than finding them all myself.

Also, apologies for a mistake in my last post. I said that 'F' was used to enter the ship. It's actually 1,2,3 to enter the ship and F to leave. I've edited the post accordingly.

Anyway, what it sounds like is that the main issues are:

  • water physics when using the first-person character
  • collision detection (is that what you mean by 'sailing on the land' Robertoo?)
  • controls for entering/exiting the boat

The other thing I'm wondering is how this runs on people's PCs (and what hardware specs they're dealing with)

I just used UVW animation to scroll the normal-map texture over a really basic waterfall mesh. I don't know how to do this for diffuse textures, so I used the water shader so that only the normal map is visible.

I'm glad you noticed it; I'm pretty proud of it, even if it is kind of basic. I think it adds a nice touch to the island.

Cheers,

George.

whaaaa... WHHHAAAAAAA!!!  :'(  :'(  :'(

i can't get it to run...   :'( :'(

all i get is the boat at the dock... i dunno, but i'm sure the fault is on my
end... i got a real old machine here....

are you using a post processing filter in the scene... that usually is what stops this
machine... (i'm trying to get a new one, but everytime i get close to something half
usable, something else comes up that i've gotta pay for)...

anyways,

the screenshots look really fantastic... really nice work G...

Sorry Mike; I'm not using any post processing filters, so I don't know what the problem could be.

I know it's not the same as actually playing it, but perhaps I'll put up some videos just to show how things look.

i'll get a worthy system up and running soon enough...

thanks...

and yeah... that foliage looks great...

Intel i5
4Gb ram
AMD Radeon HD 5700 1Gb

I think it looks great so far ;D. Thanks very much.

The only thing I'd ask is whether there is any way to provide more forward visibility when viewing the game from a first person perspective (at the wheel)? Perhaps by adjusting the sails a little?

Cheers,

George.
great game,  but the only problem is with the visibility forward so the protagonist has to turn the ship to know whats ahead. maybe you should try to reduce the size of the wheel or remove the pole that's in the way. by the way great game i had no problems running it it is a worthy update to the earlier one , maybe you should try detailing the pirate ship more it will make it look much more good and keep going! :)

Georgio... are you using a Chase Cam with a Glow or Blur Filter  enabled in the demo?
