Author Topic: Imposter Plotter Tool  (Read 5224 times)

« on: January 06, 2010, 05:15:51 AM »
Edit:you can get the imposter plotter tool here.Below is a description I posted before I released it. it's a very simple project all instructions are displayed on the screen when you run the project. (just note imposter shadows are currently not working in this release) feel free to improve it but for my needs this does the job for now.  a very simple approch.

just seeing if anyone would need this it will be finished tommorow. I needed a way to plot imposters visually for environments. so what this project does/will do is this...

the camera is a camera that allows you to fly anywhere up,down, left, right, forward and backward (camera direction relative)
and from the camera is a ray that holds the master skinmesh.

there will be 2 modes to place the imposters - 1 - the ray scans the terrain and places the imposter at an offset of the contact point of the ray and the terrain. 2 - will be an offset from the camera.

so basically you can fly around you level and plot imposters where ever you want.

you will also be able to scale and orientate the master before plotting your imposters.

at the end of all this on a key press it will export a script that will when put in your project you just link your master skinmesh to the script and it will automatically take care of positioning all you imposters based on the generated data.

it will be released as a project not an exe to make it easier for you to select different master skinmesh's and your environments.

you can see a quick pre release video here but will put it up tommorow if anyones interesting in something like this...

This is awsome! It reminds me of the ability to paint trees and foilage in another 3d engine. This is much needed!!!!!

Is it possible to use the plotter with a custom terrain (ie: rigidbody) ?
« Reply #8 on: January 06, 2010, 10:47:08 PM »
yes! actually the scan only works on bodies which is why I used the terrain object so that is not a problem at all!

I wired you a very modest amount (with my wife's name on the receipt  ;D )... your effort is invaluable and certainly deserves much more!

Many thanks for all the cool tools you're giving us!
