Author Topic: Liberation -- New Game (Alpha Pre-Official Release) [Updated 11/30/13]  (Read 1493 times)

« on: October 27, 2013, 05:35:25 PM »
So I got the alpha released for Liberation.  ;D

WELL, DUE TO CERTAIN COMPLICATIONS THAT TOOK PLACE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, I HAVE NOT HAD THE CHANCE TO UPDATE THIS THREAD. :(

NEXT UPDATE WILL BE PUSHED BACK, BUT IT SHOULD BE OUT AROUND VALENTINE'S DAY.

Yay!! Another setback. :( Curse you, schoolwork!!

Notable Features:
- multiple weapons
- a few enemies to deal with
- cutscenes (Not RADs strong suit but I made it work ;))

What's Left:
- Second timeline
- Opening level
Both of these are expected to be done in November and will probably come with the official release. EDIT: Only the opening level could be done.

***KNOWN BUGS***
- Some resolutions may result in part of the character's hand being exposed (Recommended resolution is 800x600x32)
- At the end of mission 3 the game crashes; the only way to go forward with the campaign is to relaunch the game and start it from mission 4

- sometimes throwing grenades is super duper inaccurate
- parts of meshes that are supposed to be translucent, aren't (partial fix)
- performance is also an issue - many particle effects cause lag, and the game alone runs at about 40-50 fps (10-15 near large particle emitters)
- some pictures are stretched and certain textures not stretched in the editor are stretched now
- Pinball machine does not work

- Numerous menu bugs

Remember this is not a FINISHED game, this is an ALMOST finished game. Just a few kinks to iron out, things to add, and it will be done.

This version will be used to gauge general feedback from the game, and a poll will be posted later.

HINT: With adf.ly links, wait five seconds, then click the 'skip ad' button in the top-right corner ;)

What's left:
- More action
- Introduction Level
- Zombies DLC
- New gamemode, maybe quite possibly
- Achievement menu/walkthrough thingy
- more detailed textures (normal/bump maps, etc.)
- Bug fixes (duh)

Reply what you think, and please have fun!

This looks cool, but I'm having trouble playing it. The menu loads fine, but when I try to start a new game, it closes. Perhaps this is just my computer?

...couldn't get past the menu either
Also, because I was nosy I looked at some of your models...
-Some of them are very basic looking yet have real high poly counts. For instance I saw a 4000+ poly knife model, a 24000+ poly car, a 2000+ poly pinball machine(this is just 2 boxes wtf?) -Noticed some other machinery type model with high polys that was basically just a cube but had a control panel with modeled buttons and switches... waste of geometry.
Saw some gun models at 8000+ poly but I did see a few models that looked good and had low poly counts... but again last thing I looked at was a baseball model that had 1984 triangles... I'm assuming this baseball is a small prop in the game anyway, so you should be able to make a ball shape game model with less than 100 triangles.

Dang. Thanks for giving it a go guys :)

I figured something super duper simple like this would happen. It'll be fixed by Halloween night, it's official release date (October 31st) ;)

After all the testing, I don't know how I didn't see that... I feel like a dope. I know why the level didn't load though.

Some of those models I actually used as placeholders for other things. That baseball thingy can definitely be replaced, the pinball machine will be looked at, and the car... pretty sure that was the police car -- I got to get it's hull closed. the knife... hurhm... Thanks for the polycounts Flish. :)

Lol adfly...maybe I'm not trying hard enough, but using adfly for downloads is lame imo.  I'll check this out in the morning, ive been coding and developing all day and im beat.  Will review in the morning, promise :)

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

The AdFly thing is working out though, I've been using it for two weeks and I already have 8 pennies!! xD
I mostly just use it to shorten the links though.

Ugh, sorry Dillon, I have this problem when I get on a project its like the universe doesn't exist.  I failed you today and did not get a chance to look at your game (I forgot all day, then when I remembered this post it was too late as other RL stuff was happening AND im working on a highly annoying bug in my own game that is tending toward that special place in your mind where you want to throw your computer out the window and go drink some bleach in the corner somewhere).

I WILL look at this, and when I do, I'll review it, that much I can promise, just not 'when'

Ok Dillon, as promised, I played your game (what you have so far anyway)

At first I was playing it as a developer, not a gamer.  So I opened my mind and tried to play it for what it was, and I did find myself getting into it!

I won't go over technical stuff or what seems broken or missing because I am sure you already know most of it.

I will say that after configuring my controls I began to embark on your adventure, died a few times, kept on playing, and found myself immersed!  You game already has immersion elements in the way you do the lighting, skyboxes, and characters and their dialogue.

The ONLY issue I have is that I feel the character walks too slowly, or perhaps add a sprint feature.  Other than that I'm liking what I see and encourage you to continue to work on this project.

Thanks you guys!

The technical stuff does need some editing, and I'm on top of it. Maybe. Some technical stuff I'm not sure about actually fixing, and with me not being a coding expert, it definitely wasn't easy to code what I already have. But, a commitment is a commitment. That sprint feature -- great idea! I'll take a look at it.

Next release should be the end of the month (pushed back because... well... I don't feel like working on my birthday week, which is this week :P) Hopefully some technical stuff should be updated, and some DLC should be added soon, if I can figure out how to implement it.

EDIT: If anyone was wondering, this will also be on 3DF when it is finished.

Update videos on the DLC/Release notes. Does $1 seem like a fair price?
