So an old but eternal optimization question

Imagine you're a gamer that wants to play an interesting game (a 3DRadder has made it  :) ), but you was said that the game would be loading some minutes and you should be patient. If to look from the standpoint of a gamer, how many minutes (maximum) you could be patient waiting for the start of the game (or a level)?

This is a matter of importance. Please vote (and explain).

If you want to vote less than 3 minutes or more than 10 minutes, please just post.

I know the optimization tips on the matter, so please don't give an advise directly to me.

3 minutes really for me.

Is interesting though as I've had it brought to my attention (today) that my grimball demo is taking a while on some old spec computers.

Seems like I'm going to need to go through some of those optimisations you speak of. Already identified car models as an area where some 'fat can be trimmed'.

The reason for such the low wait time though - I think it's part and parcel of the instant gratification society we live in. I should know better, after all I used to play spectrum games (look up the loading times young 'uns). But even I now wouldn't wait more than 3 minutes for a game to load.  :-\

same here i think 3 minutes is alot time even nfsu 2 loads on my lame pc faster than 3mins so i suggest not more than 3 mins ;) if the game is awesome and totaly destroying all other thoughts of ,,cool'' game and you actualy make cool game than probably not more than 5 !

we can wait some minutes if the game is made with rad, but only the first time, I fear... If I've played some times or the game has a lot of levels, wich means I must wait 3 mnutes for each level, be sure I will drop the game to the trash... ;D

anyway, loading time optimization is a must if you want to distribute your game... I would give you 1 minute max. for loading... no more ::)

even three minutes seems a lil too long to me...

to my recollection, Doom3 and Silent Hunter were  games that took the longest to load a level... and i think that even at their worst the levels were up and running in under 3 minutes...

3 miuntes..................... i will finish university bye then

X-PLANE loads huge chuncks of scenary within less than a miunte! ( 40-50 seconds ? ) so 3 minutes arent worth a game.

one minute would be fair, 2 are barely pass, 3 too much, AND 10 ??????? WHAT ARE YOU THINKING OF..........

WOS 18 loads in 3-5 seconds. ( good time )

if we make a WOS 18 similar game with rad then will take probably 20 minutes to load plus might exceed 1 GB, and the performance would be.... you know what i mean.

3d rad needs performance/loading improvements. am i right ?

What I've always wondered, is what holds 3DRad back?

Things like this make me wonder: http://www.3drad.com/forum/index.php?topic=4929.0
Sure, there might be a design flaw in the way the project was built... but really!? What's going on!?

Ah, yes, I remember that time...  :D (early 90-s for me) and in some cases I had to reload a game, if an audiocassete's tape was damaged.

1 minute Max. If my machine can't load it in that time, then my PC is too small for the game, or the game engine can't manage asset swapping.
To be really honest, I would not play a large game made with 3D Rad, it's not designed for Huge games anyway.

if it's a good game then it deserve to wait for half an hour loading ! if it's not then I will be forced to wait then I'll quit it and SHIFT+DELETE it !!

Out of curiosity - what would be considered a large game for 3drad?

Obviously it impacts on the loading time greatly, so what would be an ideal game size?

I would wait at least 5-10 minutes and not wasting my time I could make a cup of coffee/tea during the loading  :D .

A game (level) well-optimized with size 300 mb will be loading faster then the one with 150 mb not-optimized, I think.

i never played a game that loads for more than a minute, 50 secs max

EXCEPT for 3d rad games, AL OF THEM TAKE 2 MINUTES........AND IT BUGS ME :(
