Author Topic: Smooth edges  (Read 2118 times)

« on: January 31, 2011, 02:48:07 PM »
I once read a topic where someone asked if smooth edges in google sketchup will have any effect on the model in 3drad. There it was said that it has no effect, I thought that too.

Now I think otherwise. After importing a lot of skinmeshes I've found out that skinmeshes will have an harder edge when the edges in the google sketchup haven't been soften/smoothed. Look at the picture: you can see an edge, it's where the line is stil visible in the google sketchup model.

if i remember right, when they said that if it has an effect, they meant performace-wise, like if it made Rad run slower

Hi

Basic description of rendering.
Each triangular face has 3 corners called normals. These normals are used by the rendering system to smooth the appearance of the model. Each normal should be shared (welded) by another normal except for the edges. When the rendering system makes a calculation on each normal to smooths it this is where performance issues come into it.

From my experience most models I have downloaded from Shetchup the normals are not shared or welded after export. So you will need a program like Fragmotion to open the .x file and select all then weld. Right click on model select assign to smoothing group then click new. Next export and over write original file go back to 3DRAD and reload.

This will give you smooth models that look great

another way to export with smooth edges in sketchup is to select the entire model, right click at it with the right mouse button and the soften/smooth edge...and you done ;)

NOTE: The model you are created in sketchup (texture, smooth edges , etc...) will be same in 3d rad (tested in sketchup 8 pro)  8)
