OK - It's been a while since I have done a tutorial, and I want to remind you that I am an artist, not a teacher :-X. Having said that I must apologize for my rambling ;D

I have uploaded a 3D Rad tutorial on how to add a vehicle to 3D rad and get it working. In the below links I have also uploaded the max file (max9) that I used to setup this car. The zip file also includes a few other formats: 3ds, Fbx, & Obj so you can open it up in older/other modeling software. I have also uploaded the tutorial project for 3Drad, so you can see the end result. The awesome vehicle I used was uploaded by Seth at game-artist.net. I provided his email in the zip file if you want to contact him.

- Enjoy! -

Excellent just what I needed being new to 3drad.
We definitely need more of these step by step tutorials.

Yah, more tut's, im thinking that a texturing tut on the car ( the parts left out, like normal mapping etc. ) using preferably free tools like GIMP etc. would make us all very happy campers and want to throw money at the author  hint , hint , maybe a required paypal donation of any amount to access the video download.

At least this way anybody can afford to learn and the author would get a little compensation for their time and effort.

i mite be willing to do something like this my self while playing in max,or the gimp.or photoshop,  just more of a look see at someone while they work to pick up some ideas maybe , because im not an expert at anything :( .

Who couldnt afford 25 cents or a buck to view any one of us playing around while texturing or modeling or even playing in 3drad.....

I think some tut videos like this would be more than helpfull and just plain fun to watch and cheap i mite add as the donation value is up to the person.

Now if only i knew how to setup a paypal "required donation" webpage for this.....

I will look into making the tutorials compatible with Gmax after reading it's eula: "license to make and use the Software for the purpose of designing, developing, testing, and producing game content". Basically Gmax is 3Ds max 4. You can export models out of max as X files.

Quote
To convert your gmax model to .X format. Go to File > Export and select Flightsim Aircraft Object (.MDL) from the file type dropdown. Type in a filename and click Save. The Middleman dialog window should now appear. Click the Options tab and check SaveXFile (this saves the x file) and nocompile (this tells mdlcommander to only create an .X file not mdl/bgl). Then click the GO button.
I will be testing this out soon.

I don't mind doing the tutorials. Fernando has helped me out a ton in the past, so I enjoy helping him out by helping out the 3D rad'ers. You might see more from me depending on if you guys dig this one. I wont take too much time adding fancy screens and overlays. Just right down to the brass tax. If Fernando wants to host them that would be nice, then people can go to the main site for 3rd party tutorials :)

Thanx for all the help and for the great tutorial Mic!

Regarding keeping 3rd party tutorials in order, I think the best is explointing the forum features, like the ability to upload files and edit own posts. This will allow the author to maintain its tutorials without having to rely on us.

We can then eventually move all tutorial related posts to a specific board.

I think Mic is mentioning this as video's are usually quite big and free online file storeage tend to be limited and require us to buy storage space.

Seeing that this is a help process for 3drad / 3impact and it's users it would seem that you Fernando should contribute something to the pot like storage space for the tut's, of course thats also means you would be allowed to reject any that don't quite fit the bill.

Also maybe if the forum supports it you could create password protected forum area where only people you allow could post video tuts as attachments ( maybe make the attachment file size 15 or 20 Meg per video limit) then maybe the posted videos could be stored on your forum space and linked to in the other parts of the forums for us to view.

Of course i mentioned that if a paypal "DONATE" button page was used instead to access each video then you/ and/or the video author could receive some compensation towards off setting the storage costs, win , win, for everybody ! .

It just dosent seem right that we should pay for storage of help videos to your 3drad program, unless we do the paypal "DONATE" process on our own web sites, would you allow us to post links to these on the forum ? if we're the only ones make money from them ? .

Of course some or all of them could be free too, im just saying charging a small amount gives incentive to do the videos and helps pay for storage costs if a paid option is required !.....

The problem is that we can't maintain user tutorial pages really. There is also an issue with storing large files on this website.

I just hope forum functionality will suffice and that authors will be ablea to provide external links for the material, as we can't raise the attachment filesize either currently  :-\

I was thinking about it, and I have an alternative idea... :) stay tuned. - TinSoldier, size doesn't matter to me, I wish my wife thought the same... Anyway... My hosting is great for 50 bones a year. Unlimitted storage and terabit's worth of downloads.

@ Mic , sounds good,

@TNT Well actually i never even thought of youtube :( , i even have an account myself :) , but i believe they have a size limit too, that could be worked around if they do though  :)) .

PS TNT i did a quick look see at some of the youtube videos on texturing and 3dmax , long story short is they all leave a lot to be desired, most dont have sound, most run at high speed and they are also low quality ( cant see what they are even clicking on usually )  and you cant step through them page at a time either...... a better solution is required.

Also Fernando was using a program for the 3drad tut's ( the one with the green click on arrows) and i believe its free to boot..... that would allow stepping throught a video and stopping at the right spots when you need to actually see the box or values being entered, ( possibly using windows zoom tool to enlarge the mouse screen area, then we would get the best out of a video).....

I downloaded that program and installed it but havent played with it YET.......

Goodness I looked a bit at the tutorial and it looks complicated to get a model inside Rad 3D from Max which is what I use, I just purchased the engine thinking the art pipeline would be easy.

The easiest way to get vehicles in to Rad is use Skinmeshes,to do this you need to download and install
Google Sketchup and the 3DRad Sketchup exporter. After you have made your vehicle save it as a .3ds file
and import it in to Sketchup then you can use the Rad plugin to export it directly to Rad.It is best if you
read the Skinmesh tutorial on the main Rad site http://www.3drad.com/SkinMesh.php
