Author Topic: Dynamic shadows first steps  (Read 2482 times)

I just made a little scene while testing dynamic cube shadows, and I thought it looked cool :)
Adapted some from Genetransfers shaders, but without having to need a seperate shadow mesh, looks ok, just tick visible in reflections and it will cast shadow. I don't like that if the meshes get far from the pointlight they get very low res.

looks great shad, can you pm me the source as I'd love to use that with 3Impact without needing a seperate shadow caster mesh, I was unable to use the single meshes because of texture colors and would love to see your method.

like reflections you could use a larger cube texture for better shadows. but im very interested in your method.

Hello Shadmar :)

Did you ever get to fully implement this? I am going to do some testing and wanted to see how it worked out with dynamic shadows.
Thx! :)

No not really, it was just a test, in order to support all modes, we would need to use several passes on SM2 and/or SM3.
Also it would only react to point or spotlights, not direct lighting.

did you ever get this working in 3DRAD?

another question... those houses... have they been run through a lightmapper... i like the way they look, but no matter how much i try, i can't get my textures to look like that...

how do you do it...

It's really user unfriendly to use and slow. I don't think you would want to use it.
And it's only usable on one object (that is shadows are cast on one object, usually terrain/dungeon)
And it's camera height dependent, not very usable in a game setting. Real showmapping would be better.

This thread is pretty old.

Yeah I knew it was an old thread... I spent forever trying to find it.  However, all those things aside, I still have a lot of interest in it... But I'm not going to press the issue any further, if you don't think it's worth putting up. :)
