If anyone's desperate to use it before I've found the solution, installing Java3D will allow it to work.Works perfectly on my system, but then it's got all the Java bells and whistles installed.

Finally got it sorted people. I was compiling the wrong graphics library and was putting drivers in the wrong file. Java3D documentation is crap, basically trial and error figured it out. I've updated the sourceforge files. You don't need to install Java3D to run.
I'm using the camera orbit provided with the Java3D library, saves me a hell of a lotta time doing it manually so it's stuck like that im afraid!
Installing J3D...
IT WORKED, I JUST DOWNOADED JAVA3D AND IT WORKED GREAT!!! (Camera rotation is a little dizzy, but almost all java 3d things are like this, take ArtOfIllusion for example)

I've well under the way in converting the program to a terrain designer (as well as texturer). Here's a little demo video of the designing functionality:

Basically, there will be a heightmap on the right that you can draw on and perform various functions (erode, noise, smooth etc). The 3D panel on the left will then show the resulting terrain. The panel on the right will have 2 tabs. One for designing the heightmap and one for texturing the resulting terrain.
I'll release a basic version in the near future that shows some of the main features. Provided people reply to the thread with ideas and also, name suggestions for the new program (since it's no longer just texturing).
