A small script connected to a particle object can move it to new position sixty times a second. Limit how far the particle object can be shifted and you've got yourself a pretty cool way to make it look like a line, square, or even a cube(actually the cube isn't that great :P) is on fire...

I attached two projects, one a plugin, the other a demo.
If you've got comments I'd love to hear 'em.
