Author Topic: Batch .3ds to .X converter (helpful for frame-by-frame animation)  (Read 7787 times)

« on: January 24, 2010, 04:04:30 PM »
Further to my finding a bug with the PandaXporter in conjunction with my maxscript in a previous thread (and since kwxport refuses to work properly for me), I've found another way to create a sequence of meshes with little effort.

A sequence of .3ds models can be batch converted to .x with the attached program (the default settings work for 3Drad). This could also be helpful for any Poser users (exports a sequence of 3ds files).

Extract the 3 files into any folder and run winconvx.exe

I believe this could also be achieved with fragMOTION batch convert!

Does it convert animations?

Your question doesn't make sense in this context. 3ds files don't support animation. The entire point of these links are to convert a series of separate 3ds files into .x files resulting in a frame-by-frame animation. So in a sense, yes.

Wow. I'm more confused than ever now. lol.

Ok i downloaded some free artwork from 3drt to try out...each item comes in a folder with one .3dr and one .max thing.  I downloaded and installed RadImp and discovered that it apparently only works with .x extension things.  So... if download this converter program also, will it produce the .x file i need to load into RadImp and then finally import into 3D Rad? or is there a simpler way?

I'm also confused by what you mean by animation with .x because all i'm after is like a space ship model, not trying to animate it.

but on the subject i guess you make a series of .x files to put together kind of like a series of art pics making a .gif?  That might come in handy for making a moving tank tred, if it saves some memory.

You should read through all the RAD documentation as it'll probably clear things up for you. I'll try and summarise:

3drad only supports .X files as models. The .X file format supports animation (see the andro model). RAD either supports this bone animation (all in a single .X file), where every vertex in a model is rigged to an animated skeleton OR frame by frame animation (which is very similar to a series of pictures making an animated gif as you said).

The program I showed in this thread was meant for people who had a sequence of .3ds files and wanted to convert to .x files for a frame by frame animation. You could use it for a static mesh (your spaceship) too. I can't remember the settings I used with this program that RAD liked so I'd actually recommend using fragMOTION instead. The following settings export perfectly for 3drad (you can then import with radimp)

I reading thru the docs again. I downloaded Fragmotion etc and it is working and I'm getting a mesh, but not the skin.   frustrating to be such a noob.

if you're importing a .3ds into fragmotion and the texture is in the same folder, it should work. upload it here if you want me to check it out.
