Making a human character is really difficult in rad. Just for fun, I tried it once. All the joints got misindexed after a while. I think it might be possible with that ragdoll maker genetransfer made, but I can never get that to work, so I don't know
You don't need a ragdoll. You just can make a bone animated model and use the switch object to make it switch from one animation to another.
You definitely DON'T need a ragdoll to make an RPG! You're either gonna need to learn to model or buy/find your model elsewhere. If you're willing to pay, I recommend http://3dbud.com/ for RPG characters.
If not, the 3drad character given above or search www.turbosquid.com for either "man" or "woman" and display lowest price first. You'll find plenty of free character models! (always check licensing though). As for getting character into 3drad, if you can get it into fragMOTION and export .X from there, it'll usually work!
Switch object? I thought you just used script to control the 'animationset'.
