Author Topic: Tips for new Google SketchUp users exporting to 3D Rad  (Read 3300 times)

« on: June 30, 2012, 12:23:10 AM »
This thread is for anyone that has tips for any new user that wants to export their model from Google SketchUp to 3D Rad, whether it's from the warehouse or they made it. Here are mine from my experiences using it:

When you want a big city model in 3D Rad, it is best to have 2 separate files, one for the static rigidbody and another for the skinmesh. You can paint the entire model white in the rigidbody file because nobody will see it.  You can change the texture in the skinmesh file.
If the model has lots of backfaces (grey coloured faces), in the rigidbody file, press Ctrl-A and right click the model. Then left click on Reverse faces. You can see all the grey faces and you simply select the face, right click and click on reverse faces until the whole model has all while faces.

If you get the "Could not load rigidbody.x!" error, it means there is too many faces in the model and 3D Rad can't load it. You need to remove some faces or make the model smaller by removing sections of it.

Since exporting takes time, you can reduce it by selecting the whole model by pressing Ctrl-A, then right clicking the model and then left click Explode.

Good topic.

Here's my bit, about the common backface problem. If you have a model with a 1000 faces, you'll be busy all day long reversing them. Instead, just right click one correct face, and click 'Orient faces'.

Though I didn't come up with this, it was posted in another thread and thought it may be relevant to someone in this thread...

just as a quick tip on sketchup, to quickly remove all the textures from the RB before export (this will mean less for Rad to load) select all (CTRL-a) open the texture window select the blank (square with white/blue shading diagonally across it) and click the model...all textures disappear. Then open the model info window and click 'purge unused', this removes the unused textures from the file. Then export.
Every little you can remove helps with the lag.
Thanks in advance for any help

well heres 2 good tips...

if u want to have a rigidbody but the backfaces screw up just export it as skinmesh with backfaces,
take the skinmesh and all the textures and stuff from the folder and put them in rad imp and export as a rigidbody,
and load it in the game

well say you have a good idea for a 3drad game and everything going great until u add a big skinmesh or rigidbody and EVERYTHING lags up
all u do is go to sketchup pick the model thats laggin stuff up, make sure u selected the whole model, right click and select the explode model button
then export it in 3drad this helps 3drad read the model because the model is not compressed causing major lag
if everything is decompressed then 3drad dosent try to decompress it itself

I assume you are talking about 'stolen' warehouse models epikhbk1, this will have no effect unless there are groups or components to explode

well not nessecerily stolen... but downloaded and yea if theyre not in groups it wont explode

Can a mod please make this topic a sticky as this topic has great info on it?

2 tips: If you adjust the texture size just right, it looks good and it doesn't look tiled or stretched. And if you use decals (transparent textures, like black with no white background) instead of the 3D text tool, you'll reduce the face count when it comes to exporting your model.

one of the best things to learn to use is projected textures, you can use them to really finish off your models.
Also, as I have recently found out, some people don't know you can scale/rotate the textures you apply in sketchup (eh Grim? ;))

Going up to Window ... then Model Info ... purging unused does not always work right alone. There is a plugin for free on Sketchucation called Cleanup. Not only does it purge but it will optimize your file as well. Here is the direct link to get it and a few other needed plugins for it to work. Sketchup 7.1 and up free or pro.

When you download a track for a racing game, make sure you delete all things in the model that's not needed like a very high detailed house. Removing them will ensure low file sizes and great frame rate. Substitute a high poly model with a low poly one or export it as a seperate file.
