Author Topic: RUNNING 3D RAD ON WINDOWS VISTA  (Read 9147 times)

"3D Rad has stopped working" message

To run 3D Rad on Vista, if UAC (User Account Control) is enabled, you may have to right-click on the 3D Rad shortcut on your desktop and select "Run as Administrator".

Alternatively, in the start menu, find 3D Rad, right click on it, select Properties, then click on the compatibility tab and then under Privilege Level click the checkbox that says Run this program as Administrator..

The above is necessary because UAC may not allow you to run executables that, like 3D Rad, are protected by using compression.

Note that this procedure will not be necessary for your projects distributed as compiled executables (as created by the 3D Rad Compiler utility) because these executables are not compressed.

ADDITIONAL ISSUES

If you have installed 3D Rad outside the 'Program Files' folder, you can ignore the following notes completely, as no known Vista compatibility problem exists for 3D Rad, when installed this way (default since August 2008 release).

If 3D Rad is installed inside the 'Program Files' folder *AND* you have UAC (User Account Control) enabled on Windows Vista, you may encounter the problems discussed below. All problems go away if you disable UAC, but this is, in general, not recommended.

3D models exported from Google SketchUp are not found in 3D Rad

If UAC is enabled and you run SketchUp 'as administrator', SketchUp will save the models to the real folder, inside 'Program Files', instead of doing so inside Users (where UAC virtual folders are maintaned by Windows Vista).

Solution: don't run SkecthUp 'as administrator'.

As a matter of fact, if UAC is enabled, 3D Rad expects to find resources that are generated after its installation (eg your exported SketchUp models) in the Users folder.

The exact location of the 3D Rad virtual folder depends on your Vista installation, but typically it is

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\3D Rad\

All my resources disappeared after I switched UAC off (or ON)

This is again caused by the fact that Vista uses a virtual folder to store 3D Rad resources that are generated after its installation, if UAC is enabled, and 3D Rad is installed inside the 'Program Files' folder. When you switch UAC off, 3D Rad looks for the resources into its installation folder instead.

But your artwork should be still there, in the virtual folder at

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\3D Rad\
