Author Topic: Small space game (Rescue Mission)  (Read 1543 times)

« on: October 17, 2010, 03:03:44 PM »
Hi,everyone.
Today I've finished a small game.This is my first game with 3Drad.
Actually I want to make a full space game sort of Elite, but ages may pass
before I manage to make it.That's why I made this small game first.
It will be a piece of the full game.

Plot: You are a space trader.You're on your way from Mars to a near-Earth station.
Suddenly you receive a message from The Solar System Emergancy Company:
" A passenger ship returning from Mars to the Earth enveloped by flames.
So the passengers hurriedly left the endangered ship by taking to secure escape pods.
Can you rescue them by picking up one of these escape pods ?
Their lives are on the line !"

In order to carry out the mission you need:
1) Hurriedly get to the disaster area (epicentre is the wrecked ship);
2) Find out and carefully pick up the escape pod (you must approach 3 km and
    your speed must be very slow);
3) Rush it up to the near-Earth station, because your time is limited.

But be careful:
-the mission involves some danger so you yourself may go in danger of your life;
-do not get near the burning ship;

Some tips:
-rush to the disaster area at full speed (your ship has top speed - 11.1 and it's good enough);
-as you approach the disaster area, you will notice the burning ship first and then the
  escape pod near it. Gradually slow to a bottom speed before you'll be ready to pick up
  the escape pod.
-as you picked it up, turn to the Earth and again rush to it at full speed.
-now you have to find the station and get to it within 200 km.
- Indicators are to be paid attention in order to find your location and the one of the escape pod or the station as well.

Ship conrolling:
'W' key - forward (top speed)    'S' key - backward      'L' key - forward (bottom speed)
'Up' key - Pitch rotation Up         'Down' key - Pitch rotation Down
'Left' key - Yaw rotation Left       'Right' key - Yaw rotation Right
'Z' key - Roll rotation counterclockwise   'X' key - Roll rotation clockwise
'U' key - Pick up the escape pod

or press 'F1' in case you forget (press it again to hide the instuctions)

Enjoy !

Bugs reported or any comments are welcomed.

P.S. Forgot to say: this is a compiled project (most will guess themselves).
      And forgot to add screenshots:

Not a bad start,  a little bit too much "dead time" in space, but I see this being a nice start....

Kinda reminds me of the old startfleet academy game.

After Playing a bit more.... The A and D keys do nothing for me,

After I melt my ship and reset the game, the alarm does not reset.

The escape Pod has a bad shadow caster mesh...

This is not evident until you get very close to the pod, but flying in frictionless space can be a b*tch. Nice touch.
 Don't know if this is by design or not, but the Hud sprite does not stretch all the way across the screen for me.

Overall, you have a great start. I hope you keep working on this.

Sweet, practice makes perfect.. A few glitches, but nothing that you can't sort out.
Nice going Alec.

DID ANYONE PASS THE GAME ? IF YES, WITH WHICH RESULT ? (IT'S POSSIBLE !)

Ah,yes. 'A' and 'D' keys don't work. Actually 'Z' and 'X' keys.
Also, after  the player's ship melted and the game reseted , the alarm didn't reset.
These 2 simple glitches are sorted out and I've replaced the project.

I remember the game,which I used to play on ZX Spectrum in the distant 1992.
it is scarcely imaginable... 32 kb RAM and it was playable enough  :).

Thanks electron_theory and Jestermon for feedback !

This looks good for the first steps of the game.
The first time i started it i felt really lost in space because there is no sign of something like a way point to orientate. After i saw the coordinates on the top of the screen i just oriented by them but i think if there are larger missions this would be very annoying.
Then i flew in the direction of the destroyed ship but suddenly the sound stopped. After arriving i didn't know what to do because i forgot what key to press to rescue the people. A message would be good at this time but i only got the "you are near the center of the wreck" message. The key also wasn't on the help screen so i decider to randomly press some keys and the game shuts down  ;D.

You should add some kind of small moving particles or something like, at the moment the movement looks a little static.

Thanks, Mandelbaum for feedback. I'll take it into account.I agree the player's
ship should be equipped with some kind of a scanner or compass to be good at finding player`s way in space.

suddenly the sound stopped
Do you mean the sound of alarm when "Dangerous distance to the burning ship" appears ?

Perhaps you mean something like this:

Nice concept indeed, looking forward to seeing more of this :)

I mean exactly something like this ^^
I tried it now again and the sound stops immediately after pressing y to start the game. I can hear the beam on board sound (i think i was to far away the last time) and finish the mission successful, or not... i don't know because the timer goes on after the mission ends ind i get also the fail message  ;)

Keep the good work going on.

Yes, I'll do my best  ;).

Btw, the mission ends when you receive the message:

"Congratulations ! Escape Pod has been rushed to the station" .

As for streaking stars, that method suits to interstellar travels best (IMO),
because if you move about solar system, stars actually mustn't streak.
