With a planet explorer type game in mind, as part of a space-theme, I started playing with the radial gforce. Nothing special in this project, except that the planet is optimized as low as I could for a 1500m radius. That's almost 10,000m around the equator.. With a poly count of only 9800. I'll need to double the poly count to get rid of the "bumps" when you drive, but it is indeed viable for a game.
I will need to figure out how to apply a tiled texture to the mesh, in order to get detailed terrain across the globe, before I start shaping the hills and valleys.

You could try one of the rgb2tx shaders, which maps 3 textures to the meshes RGB colors. (ex : R=rock, G=grass, B=sand)
And then you can tile them indiviually as much as you need.

Excellent idea, thanks shadmar.

believe it or not... this was one of the first lil things i did with RAD... a buggy that gould leap from the earth to the moon...

if you made this i'd buy...

how do you plan on carving the valleys and peaks on the planets...

in 3dsMax (or GMax), you can apply a displace modifier to a sphere...

Or noise modifier

Did a small test with the shader from out in space down to the surface.
It's not bad.

Moon buggies are the only vehicles I like, 'cause I'm a Sci-fi nut :)
You really would buy a planet explorer? ... hmmm I'll look into this idea sooner then.

Mesh (clay) sculpting is one of my favorite hobbies. I use tools such as Amorphium, Zbrush, Sculptris and others.

As of late I absolutely love Sculptris. What makes it so great is it's volumetric sculpting; in other words, it adds polygons as you add volume to the body.
