Author Topic: Lego destruction arena ( working title )  (Read 2015 times)

« on: September 10, 2010, 10:40:40 AM »
Hi everyone!
I started a side project with 3drad along with our animegames Saiyan Aftermath project. My project will be a Lego game with destructable cars. I plan it as a 1 vs 1 arena battle game with a weapon and collision destruction, so ram your enemy to damage it. Sounds simple, because it is.  :D
I made a car for the first testing, it's not imported into 3ds max yet. Here is a screenshot about it in 3ds max. Some elements will be work as rigid bodies, and they will be connected as joint to the car.
If you have a better car LEGO car for this, please tell me :P  It was made quickly, without plan  :D Hopefully I will able to make it workable. The first test will be about: drivable car, parts jointed, deactivate joints by pressing a key.

How did you export the ldd file to a usable format?

I tried to figure it out by myself. I use 3D via printscreen for ripping the model out from LDD, KoichiSenada 3dxml importer for 3ds max, and Panda Direct X exporter to export it to 3drad. It's a little bit long to explain it, how to do it, but I made a tutorial about it in 3 parts, what you can check on my YouTube channel. The only thing what it doesn't explain is how to fix the "decorations" of LDD, like minifigure head, but I will make a short video about it. It's not so complicated, and it work perfectly with 3Drad. Also you don't need to make textured materials, where you don't need them, you can just use colored, untexturized, also with opacity settings, and in will be saved in the X format correctly.
Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLfb2RczhOI - part 1
This is directly made for 3ds max, if somebody know, how to import 3dxml to blender, that should be good, because in that case, all the used software should be free.

Hi,

did you try to use leocad (www.leocad.org). it's free and it can import ldr files from lego designer and can export obj. when you have obj it is pretty easy to import them in blender and then to x file.

Wow, really? I will have to try it out. I can make things much easier, and reduce working time! Thanks for the info, I will tell you my opinion and experiences about it.

Sorry for double posting, but I would like to show you a little progress.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HllcDFH6sk4 - LDD car test #2
What you can see is:
a Lego cardetachable part4 wheels attached to a rigid body, it uses this systemcustom Lego wheelvery badly working shadow (simple mesh for shadow, but something is wrong with it, its triangle count is only 316, and no holes in the mesh )
There will be an other video about the 3ds max file soon!

Also I checked Leocad, I found lot of Pros and Cons using that for lego models.

Ok so start with pros.PROS
  • easy to use
  • directly exports to obj, and 3ds
  • much faster and less complicated than my method
  • you can use it with Blender
But there are some really bad things about it.CONS
  • high polycount!!!
  • Leocad doesn't know all the LDD bricks, so it simply skip them (my car wheel was missing for example)
  • my car in 3ds format was glitchy, in obj format, the materials were wrong.
