Author Topic: Yet another set of sketchup questions  (Read 1178 times)

hello all,

i have a few questions about sketchup

1. when you export a model as a skinmesh for 3d rad, it looses quality, and when you edit a model from the 3d warehouse it makes the quality even worse. Is there a way to get around this.

2. when you export a model as a shadow, how do you get the shadow to work.

3. if you export as ridgidbody, then can you use this for acurate collision detection on the skinmesh.

4. are you able to create terrains with sketchup

5. when i export a traslucent texture, on 3d rad it causes you to be able to see through the whole car, instead of only seeing whats behind the texture. i have already checked the "3d depth" option, how can i fix this.

thx for your help,

1.- I suggest to you to use another 3d software.
2.- The shadow model must be a closed hull. see the modeling guidelines in the docs.
3.- Skinmesh object does not have collision detection. You must use RigidBodies for that.
4.- Not sure, but you can always import a terrain made by another software into sketchsucks.
5.- You must use an alpha mapped texture and apply transparency only to the windows, or use a different skinmesh object for the windows.

hope it helps

1. i would, but i can find any that are as simple as sketchup, if you know of one please let me know
5. what do you mean by alpha mapped?

thx

1. no idea why it would lose quality other than the different rendering of sketchup and 3d rad. unless you are talking about backfaces not showing(most warehouse models are flooded with showing backfaces)
2. you overwrite an existing model with the shadow to add a shadow to the model (it does not really overwrite it)
3. Psiko got that one
4. sort of, but they are total crap unless you actually draw out every little detail yourself
last 5. texture with alpha in the texture, not set in sketchup.
here's a gray square with alpha applied

Currently using 7.22

3. so when you go to save it, say the model name is "car". then you overwrite the model "car" and 3drad automatically does the shadows?

5. I dont understand what you mean, how do i get an Alpha texture to work, and where do i put it?

thx again

Look, an alpha texture is the same as a diffuse map texture and both should work the same way.
The reason the depth sorting option isn't working for you is because 3drad does not depth sort every polygon in your skinmesh individually. Instead, you need to separate the model into 2 skinmeshes.
So say your exporting a car..
Export the car as a skinmesh
Then export the windows as another skinmesh

In your project, connect both skimeshes to your car object.

As for the shadow caster, it must be a closed hull mesh I think. Make a simpler model for the shadow caster, otherwise your project will slow down considerably with higher polygon shadow casters.

If your not seeing the shadow, it's probably because you need to check the box "receive shadows" for whatever skinmesh you are tying to cast shadows onto.

Does that help?

i dont like the program...
hey!

4. use the Sandbox tools, just go to preferences, extensions, check "Sandbox Tools"
hit ok and then go to view>toolbars>sandbox
to use it just click on "From Scratch" tool and draw the grid.
then use Smoove to make elevations.
(also if you want, find a topographic map, redraw it on sketchup move the line sequences up and down to adjust height, slelect all of them and click "From Contours" tool.

HOPE I HELPED!
