Author Topic: Advanced Character Movement v2.0  (Read 3629 times)

sorry to dig up an old thread.....
Chebob, how possible would it be to make the character directional controls a bit smoother? (like to make the character rotate a bit as it points in the pressed direction)

Thanks  in advance.

Hmmm can you give a video example or anything?

If I understand your meaning, the problem would be that while it would look nicer in terms of animation, it would be slower in terms of translational movement?

a video of the problem that I am talking about can be found by clicking one of my sig links.... But yes I think what you are suggesting is on the right track.  It may be a bit slower, but in fact this may be seen as more realistic.

Just an idea, if you have long since moved on from this, I fully understand :)

I can't see the video you mean.

It shouldn't be too much work to implement, I'm not sure when or why it would be used-most games seem to use my current method nowadays. Maybe an RPG where the movement response time isn't key.

I'll look into it when I have free time, my first priority is releasing v2 of my RTS project though!

I agree that most games use this style, the issue is that the transition between changes in direction is too abrupt... Perhaps I was unclear before.

The link to the video is right here http://gamedevilblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/tea-party.phpl

In it you will see the abrupt changes of direction that I am speaking of and would like to smooth out.

Yeah I saw that!

I meant can you give me a video example of the kind of motion you're aiming for. Always easiest to copy from somewhere else if possible!

to be honest, I was thinking about the way grand theft auto 4 controls, but I was unable to find a video that demonstrates it well :\
A vid that I did find is from a game called crackdown 2... you can see a bit of it here

This one shows a bit better what I am talking about :)

If it is easy to do that's cool :) if not, no worries :)
