The way im working on my vehicle is exactly that way. I have it chopped into different parts: The Main Body, Headlights , glass etc. And the I put them together in rad as different skin meshes, assigning each skinmesh accordingly. ;D

export the the different env areas as frames. So if you the intakes and such to be matte, export them as mesh_001.x. Then export the rest as mesh_000.x. You can then have 2 skin meshes and make the appropriate settings for each part.
