It's 4 sort of... if you have a skinmesh and 6 pointlights only the 4 closeest to the skinmesh will be used.

Am I right in thinking when I add the Sunlight object, it effectively becomes the main scene light overriding the default lighting ?

Yes, but you can have black sun and only use pointlights. Problem is, pointlight doesn't create shadows, only the sun can do that.

Would also appreciate any further info on my mipmap problem, seems like messing with the mipmap levels on a skinmesh helps with this, but not sure if that was the way to go, or whether there was a better solution ( global solution as opposed to per object basis ) ?

Using all mip-map levels gets to blurry for me, I only use 2-3 levels.
