but as I said: changing to terrain did it!
I played around with it and see that the 'cancel' button in terrain requester not proper worked
the sequence goes further without filename and shows several error messages, but no serious.

Ahh I think maybe the Terrain object has the ability to read paths in the .x to get texture but Skinmeshes/RB's do not.
Anyway I'll fix the cancel bug in 0.5, thx for reporting it
EDIT: this gave me an idea, maybe to add "Strip texture paths from mesh" feature
