Author Topic: Racing game powerups  (Read 464 times)

« on: November 06, 2013, 10:25:45 AM »
So, I got this racing game now that works and communicates with a level select and sled modifying tool.

But I'm looking for random ideas for powerups, you know, those cubes of wonder you drove through in Mario Kart that let you wreak havoc on the race.

My game is similar, but instead of go-karts, you're riding sleds.  There are circuits, downhill, sphere, cylinder, half-pipe, full-pipe, battle, and many more types of races to challenge you.

So, I'm thinking about what kinds of powerups you, the player, would like to see in this game.  I'm not asking anyone to think for me, I'm just seeing what kinds of powerups you think would fit this type of game.

Asking for ideas is not a bad thing.

Above all there is of course the nitro feature. I don't think the boost should regenerate on it's own, like it does now.
What about picking up snowballs which you can throw in front of you to slow down enemies.
Or what about being able to drop a snowman which can slow down your opponents.

I agree, the boost dynamic was originally for the open world stuff so it might not apply in a race situation.  I might tailor the boost to generate by collecting boost powerups that increase your timer similar to what was done in hydro thunder.

I do want to try something like the red turtle shell, but am unsure how to tell the game to target the driver 1 position ahead of you (since the race tracker only tracks your position as Main Vehicle).  If I could track the position of all the racers I could do a lot more dynamics that I've shelved because of that limitation.

Just use a Racetracker for each opponent...
