Author Topic: HOW TO make a Terrain in Sketchup - the tutorial  (Read 2045 times)

« on: April 19, 2013, 02:00:15 PM »
hi, here is a quick tutorial on how to make a simple tile-able terrain in google sketchup.
The steps are basic, but if you have knowledge of this great software, it does help.

You will need the sandbox tool. If you cab find it, go to the menu bar and click on the window tab. Then click preferences. Select extensions and select sandbox. Press ok and it should be in the tools menu.
See this video if you can't find the tools.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfRAERzzeFU&feature=youtube_gdata_player

next video.shows you how to make the terrain.

by the end of this, you should have something that looks a bit like this

one tip, be carefull not to make any diagonal lines go where the outside squares are, otherwise it wont tile as nicely :)

terrian exported and included for free use, no need to credit.

YOU TUBE VIDEO TO SHOW HOW TO DO IT -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x82dljKpO0g

ps if you would like a copy of this song, in a optimized .ogg format, please feel free to ask :)
it is another one that i have made myself :) :)

I will make a more indepth annotated one soon, desbribing exactly what to do and how to do it.

Please say if you found this helpful and if not, why as this would be a great help tp me.

Thanks!

Interesting. In this case the edges of the terrain are all flat, so you never get the gap that you get with L3DT. It may look great on the image, but on an infinite terrain can get a bit boring. But yes, this is a nice solution. And actually a real nice post coming from "Red". Well done.

Next after playing around with the smooth tool, we want to know how to use the other tools for the sandbox.

The tools used in this part of the tutorail are " Drape and Stamp ".

by the end you should have something that looks a bit like this...

to make the stamp tool work properly, you have to make the house into a component. then select the house, and use the stamp tool on the terrain.

same with the drape tool for the road. make the road a component, select it and use drape on the terrain underneath it. (you can have the road way above the terrain, and it should still work fine.)
then delete the component road and colour the new road.

again, say what you think, if it has helped, if not why. if you need any help, please ask.

Sketchup files, part 1 and 2 attached below.
no need to credit :)
free for non and comercail use ;) :P

Very good post Cob-man. Keep them rolling in. At this rate, you may yet make a fan out of me.
Just lay off those HUGE LETTERS, it makes the post look like an advert for  cheap socks.

Ok sure. I just used it to emphasize the title and the tut video link.
Just make them bold or underline them. BIG characters are used by noob kids to get attention. You're growing up, and want to get past that stage... And we all read very well. We know a title is a title, we don't need to be "forced" to look at it. But carry on the good work.

How to make an awesome race track in sketchup

In this tutorial we will learn how to ake a pretty cool race track again using the sandbox tools.

The tools i used are
  • sandbox-
    • From scratch (you can just manually make the squares yourself, but this is faster)
    • smooth
    • Stamp
  • Drawing tools -
    • Arc (to get nice smooth curves)
    • Line/Pencil
    • OPTIONAL - eraser
You should end up with something a bit like this.

view the video tutorial below

post screenshots of what you have made and done with this tut, and as usual, if you have any
problems, please say and i will be happy to help :)

So, I followed that first part of the video, just generating simple hills, how ever, where I start having issues, is how to export it to a terrain file, using sketchup.

I have the 3drad plugin for it, and when I hit plugins, and select the 3d rad one, I see all the options. My issue, is, what format do i Export it as.

I saw in the attached files, that it was exported as a Rigid body, but yet, when I try to load it in, using both the regular add obj option, and the install option, nothing changes with the file, it's just a bridge looking thing, but not the example file.

Am I missing a step, or did I break it?

I have my own version, saved and ready in SU just can't figure out how to get it into 3drad

Ok, so basically for the exporter you need to select your 3drad folder to know where to export to.

Then export as a static ridged body. Also a skinmesh, but not neded.
In the engine,
Open it ip and for its mass select -1.
If it asks if you want to change it to dynamic, select no.
Ill post a more anotated version soon to explain better.

Try to look at this its very good tut, i made it a while a go when i was still julius ceasar or mcar then i took 6 months long break and now i am back look it its good but i know better way of making terrains. first i generate it in L3Dt then i export it to sketchup as a 3ds file and then i export it fro sketchup to 3d rad i think is better way.
